Odds and Ends: eMac display problems
eMac display problems A number of users on Apple´s discussion boards are reporting a wide array of problems with the eMac´s 17 inch CRT display. Among the most disturbing reports:
"I have had my eMac for 5 days now, and I´ve had this problem ever since I got it. The screen is very nice, but I have this greenish/blueish field at the bottom-right corner of the screen. It´s most noticable when I move something with a white background (e.g. a Finder window) down to that corner."
"I´m very pleased with the eMac. The big exception to that is the display. The bottom right corner is discolored/darker than the rest. The display also has major moire problems at both far sides but not in the center. I´ve also noticed the the right bottom corner, (the discolored area), shakes/jitters when there is any major hard drive activity going on."
One reader, who claims to have received information from an Apple employee, writes:
"He said he was familiar with the problem and they found it at every incoming inspection when eMacs arrived. Basically, the screen has a bad shadow mask that is loose inside the CRT. The vibration from the speakers causes it to warp and bend just enough to start deflecting the electron beam. He said there isn´t much you can do about it short of dampening the speaker enclosure from the eMac´s housing."
