(Artikeln hittar du här) Apple provides details on FYQ4 Financials Wednesday, October 16, 2002 @ 6:10pm Apple CFO Fred Anderson led today´s conference call making several notes on Apple´s fourth quarter financials, including numbers on Apple´s successful retail division. * About $1M of the one-time charges was related to acquisition of Emagic ("in-process R&D charge"). * Apple decreased channel inventory from 6.5 weeks at the end of the June quarter to 4 weeks at the end of the September quarter, which it said was in the desired 4-5 week range. Apple had expected it to take two quarters to reach the desired inventory levels and Anderson said he was "pleased" to see the channel inventory reduction along with the slightly increased revenues for the present quarter--especially given the weakened environment. Anderson noted however, that Apple would continue to try to reduce channel inventories, as it was currently at the high-end of the range. * Apple shipped 318,000 iMacs, including 76,000 CRT models, 129,000 eMacs, and 113,000 flat-panel iMacs. Apple said it saw a stronger-than-expected demand for the 17" iMac. * Apple said that the iBook did very well in both consumer and education markets. It shipped 180,000 iBooks with Combo drive model becoming increasingly popular. Over 40% of education sales were portables--mostly driven by iBook sales, including 17,000 ibooks to the State of Maine. Apple said it expects to sell 18,000 more iBooks to Maine next year in the third quarter. * Apple said that PowerBook and Power Mac sales were down mostly due to the weakened economy ("extending the life of their current Macs"). Responding to an analyst question, Anderson said that he did not believe that the 17" iMac was cannibalizing sales of Power Macs. * Apple sold more than 140,000 iPods this quarter, including over 54,000 Windows iPods. Apple expects that with a full-quarter of Windows iPod availability (they did not become available in the current quarter until mid-August) and its partnership with Best Buy, iPod sales will be much stronger in the coming quarter. Anderson reiterated that the iPod continued to garner rave reviews almost one year after its debut. The four top selling MP3 players in Japan were iPods and combined, they accounted for 42 percent sales of all the MP3 players sold in Japan in September. * Apple said it sold 100,000 copies of Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar in the first weekend and over 280,000 copies during the quarter (excluding volume licenses). Apple said that it was still targeting 20% of its user base, about 5 million users, to be using OS X as their default OS by the end of the calendar year. * Education sales were up 4% sequentially from the prior quarter, but down 12% from the year-ago quarter. Anderson said that the June and September quarters were usually flat, and that he hoped the sequential sales increase on Apple´s part would at least maintain Apple´s educational market share and hoped it may even provide a little boost, although Apple had no specific numbers. * Apple said its retail stores turned in an "outstanding quarter." Apple´s retail revenue was up from $63 million last quarter to $102 million; Apple said that it saw a first time positive benefit from its Apple Stores. It opened 9 new retail stores, including "high-profile" stores in New York and Los Angeles, for a total of 40 stores at the end of the quarter. The stores attracted more than 2.25 million people during the quarter. Each store had a projected annualized revenue of $12 million (average of 35 stores). Apple´s retail division loss improved sequentially from $6 million in the June quarter to $3 million driven by store contribution that was positive for the first time (not including a $20 million realized profit from manufacturing associated with the retail segment). Apple was pleased with the increased sales conversion rate, noting that 40% of CPU sales were users who did not own a Mac. Anderson attributed the success of the retail division to the developing sales culture, the "Switcher" campaign, and the "beyond the box" selling. Apple expects to open 10 more stores by Thanksgiving for a total of 50 stores by the end of the quarter--one short of its previously stated 51-store goal. Apple said that at the end of the quarter, 31% of the US population will live within 15 miles of an Apple Store. * Apple said its CompUSA relationship was strong with increased sales of 80% year-over-year using Apple consultants. Apple said it was starting a similar program in Japan by training 60 representatives for the Japanese market--to be stationed in each of the 60 highest volume resellers. * Anderson conceded the "negative" press surrounding the iTools to .Mac conversion, but said that .Mac subscriptions exceeded Apple´s expectations "by a large margin" and that Apple currently had more than 200,000 subscribers. * Apple´s gross margins, at 26.4%, were down this quarter due to planned price reductions, aggressive pricing/promotional bundles (which offset better-than-expected component costs for memory and flat-panels), and a greater proportion of consumer product sales. * Apple said its effective tax rate was 25%, but expected it to increase to 28% in the next quarter. Cash reserves were up $30 million to $4.337 billion. Days sales outstanding was 36 days, while internal inventory was at 4 days. Its cash conversion cycle was at negative 37 days. Apple´s operational expenses were slightly higher than expected by $6 million (for a total of $396 million) due to increased spending on "demand-creation activities during the quarter." * For the next quarter, Apple says it expects an increased tax rate, a decline in component costs, increased operating expenses to $420 million (with more retail stores and higher advertising/promo spending), a slight increase in revenue, higher gross margins (by 100-150 basis points), and a slight profit (before non-reoccurring items): "We´re planning for the worst, but hoping things will get better." * Apple did not provide details on its online sales, Xserve sales, and worldwide geographical breakdown or comments on the declining proportion of International sales.
