"NEW IMACS -- NO
Sorry, but this dog just won't point. Employees tell us that Apple is laughing at the rumors on this one -- spearheaded by recent analyst prognostications -- and the company is loving the hype that just makes everyone want to pay attention to WWDC even more. But the bottom line is this: June is too early to roll out a consumer product that needs just the right amount of momentum entering the holiday buying season. Besides, Apple is just starting to build this product in Asia, we're told.
And another thing: would Apple really announce a consumer iMac re-design and not broadcast the event live on the Web or via satellite? The company has no such plans for WWDC. Look back at your calendars -- Apple hasn't announced a similar product without major PR hype in years.
Sorry to Merrill Lynch's Steve Milunovich and J.P. Morgan's Bill Shope -- both of whom issued research notes anticipating new iMacs next week -- you're way off on this prediction. Even if reliable sources hadn't confirmed this to us, common sense says that this rumor is a bust.
WHAT ELSE?
That leaves the one product WWDC was really meant to talk about ... Tiger. Apple plans to "ooh" and "aah" developers and the crowd with lots of new features; in the coming days we hope to pass along additional details of what the next-generation OS will have.
Smaller software or peripheral announcements are always a possibility, but when it comes to new iMacs, the bottom line is that the hype is bigger than the reality of what we've heard coming at WWDC."
