Nord Modular G2 & physical modelling

Joe.. jag har för mig att det sedan kom ut att de där mp3-filerna inte är gjorda på en NM. Någon som minns mer av vad som hände?

Va? Jo, jag tror att de gjordes på en NM allt. Jag lyckades få tag i cellon som tog alla fyra slottar i anspråk för att funka (man fick koppla ut till in då tre slottar var "resonanskroppar" å en var ljudalstrare). Tyvärr så fick den som köpte min NM kb med patchen (å min HD som hade backupen är död).

Jag klipper lite från ett SAS-mail:

"Samma snubbe (Ken Elhardt) terroriserade NordModular-listan för några
år sedan - han påstod sig ha gjort några mycket bra stråk-patchar och
postade en mp3 som lät otroligt naturtroget. Alla undrade hur han
gjort men han vägrade posta patcharna med hänvisning till att de var
till något kommersiellt projekt så att han inte fick. Folk försökte
pressa honom jättelänge på tips om hur han gått tillväga och han
svarade lite grumligt och var allmänt hemlig.

Efter typ ett halvår uppdagades det att allt var bluff, inspelningen
var en riktig stråkkvartett...
Sjukt tråkig humor..."

Vad som är sant eller inte har jag ingen aning om.. men jag hade hört liknande grejer från andra håll tidigare också.

Det talades på SAS om att det talades på NM-listan att patcharna var fejk, men jag har inte sett några direkta bevis på det. Det Mårre skriver verkar ju tala för att de är äkta, och jag tycker att vissa av ljudfilerna också är rätt tydliga bevis på det. Galningar med för mycket tid och intresse åt det obskyra finns ju alltid, och ibland så får de till imponerande resultat.

Jag har också haft Mårres patch. Tyvärr sålde jag min NM innan jag fick tummen ur och testa... Så jag vet inte hur bra det lät.

oavsett vad så låter det otroligt snyggt ..
om det nu är en modular så är det verkligen grymt och jävlar vilket arbete som måste ha lagts bakom det ...

Men nu har vi ju annars ett gäng NM-marodörer samlade här i tråden.. kanske se om vi kan få ihop nåt liknande?

Tror jag nämnt det tidigare, men jag testade lite stråksyntes utifrån ett kapitel i SOS Synth Secrets. Lade bara nån dryg halvtimme på det, men inom vissa intervall blev det lite stråkkaraktär. Så jag tror helt klart det är möjligt, men det krävs nog en del teoretisk kunskap om man ska nå ända fram. Trial-and-error funkar ju bara till en viss gräns

Min patch var original-NM så jag kan tyvärr inte vidareutveckla den längre.

Peter H: fick du den av mig (minns inte men jag försökte sprida den men tyvärr sålde jag NM:en vid den tiden). Elhardt e ju annars en duktig nisse (professor?). Han jobbade ju med att utveckla demos för MOTM:s analogsystem.

Kollade runt lite på nätet å upptäckte att det var han som gjorde "pianocrashpatchen" som är helt otrolig. Han skrev oxå en lång redogörelse om hur man skulle göra för att få "rätt" pianocrashljud.

"For those who requested the piano crash patch, here it is. I still haven't
upgraded to 3.x of the editor, but I'm assuming it's backwards compatible.
To get the sound in the MP3 file I recorded myself hitting 8 notes in a very
low octave (D-50 keyboard transposed down 12 semitones), then recorded 8
notes in an octave above that. I may have turned off the stereo chorus and
done the above steps yet again, so I had a differing left and right stereo
pair. They're all mixed together. Add a slight bit of reverb and EQ the
hell out of it for personal taste and realism and that's how I did it."

[1] This was done to hear several synthesized acoustic instruments playing
at once to see how real they sound together. First distant sound is from
the JP-8080, then two tracks of Alesis Andromeda acoustic guitars (one nylon
and one steel string) come in, then Nord Modular violin followed by cello,
then MOTM wood flute near the end. Music was just made up in real-time as I
played, but it sounds like something between William Ackerman and Shadowfax.

[2] This is a two track recording (duet) of me tyring different Andromeda
acoustic guitar sounds and improvising on the Hotel Califonia theme. I'm
trying different patches and different SE-70 effects unit settings
throughout. I'm using the SE-70's high stage count phaseshifter and
parametric EQ to get a nice guitar body resonance, especially noticable at
the beginning of the file. About 50% of the signal was split off and run
through a Boss acoustic simulator mostly to act as an exciter and give a
bighter top end for steel string type sounds. (1153K)

[3] If you haven't heard it already on the Synthtech site you can skip this
one. Here is a breath controlled recorder patch done on the motm
(background is sampled guitar and piano). All enveloping of the sound and
tremelo is done with the Yamaha BC-3 breath controller to get expressive
human played dynamics. The filter resonance is modulated with noise to give
a nice breathy effect. (428K)

[4] This is a Nord Modular patch that tries to emulate the Moog string
filter. It's a 32 band highly resonant filterbank with bands placed about 5
to the octave. It however runs in series into the SE-70 high stage count
phaseshifter and a bunch of EQ. It's meant to process sound with a wooden
resonant body tone. First you hear an unprocessed MOTM sawtooth wave, then
you hear the dramatic effects of the MOTM processed through the above
effects to get a very exaggerated cello timbre. The last part is an
orchestral run overdubbing a bunch of celli and violins that use the above
techniques. (196K)

[5] Here I'm trying some new Nord Modular solo string sounds using breath to
control the depth and rate of vibrato. Pedal is used for loudness. I also
wanted to hear how well they fit in with a real acoustic instrument (sampled
piano). The strings use multiple high resonance delay lines in parallel
(comb filtering) for wood-like resonance, along with many stages of EQ, a
couple of wave wrappers, and a bit of fixed phaseshifter. The phaser
actually produces a bit too hollow of a cello sound here which I'll correct
later. There's all kinds of other detailed programming such as fretless
instrument emulation so that random pitch variations are generated on key
presses keeping the strings a little out of tune. Really helps them from
sounding fake when playing octave intervals. Starts off with cello, then
moves into temporary violin and cello pizzicato patches, then later into
violin and yet another cello patch joins in. (2322K)

[6] Here I'm multitracking a bunch of Nord Modular solo strings (violins and
cellos) to form a large string orchestra. The instruments were placed in
different positions in the stereo field and different distances from the
listener giving an engulfing 3D effect. Since each track was recorded with
differing dynamics and imperfections, it sounds quite human. Excuse the
crappy metallic builtin mixer reverb. (430K)

[7] This one shows hard to synthesize percussive sounds. Here is a Roland
JP-8080 cymbal crash. It uses two different stacked timbres then those are
played polyphonically on five keys thus using all 10 voices of the synth for
a big metallic cymbal sound. Then follows a Nord Modular kettle drum. One
fixed LP filter, one fixed BP filter, five more keyboard tracking bandpass
filters, and three EQ stages help shape the noise portion of this patch into
a kettle drum timbre. It was synthesized in less than 20 minutes before
bedtime one night! Then follows a multitracked Nord Modular sound that
emulates what one would hear if placed inside a piano when somebody dropped
a heavy load on the lower keyboard of a piano. (293K)

[10] I spent 1.5 days synthesizing a single violin tone as a proof of
concept for an advanced additive synth I may write specifically for doing
realistic and expressive string sounds. Just for fun I put some info about
how that was done in this Wendy Carlos - Secrets of Synthesis style audio
file. Also at the end is a hokey fake advertisement showing the sad state
of affairs of current string synthesis. Note that the Nord strings at the
end of that ad are just snippets from the earlier MP3's above and DON'T use
the method described in the earlier part of the file. (2275K)

Elhardt använde (som man kan läsa) breath controller för att få rätt feeling. Jag frågade om det på mailinglistan å fick tipset att skaffa en MIDI Solution Breath Controller och en Yamaha BC-3A men det blev aldrig av. Nu kanske det är dags!

Att hans patcher inte släppts ut på nätet beror nog på att han är en "professional sound designer" (pianocrashen släpptes dock av honom gratis pga att jag känner igen det Volle nämner om att det inte skulle vara äkta).

Väldigt inspirerande att folk kan göra sådana här grejer med sina synthar, lite svårt att se igenom den förutfattade blip-blop synen man har på sina grejer. Är det någon som vet om man kan plugga ljudskapande i skolmiljö?
