Pages!

January 11, 2005 (11:22AM CST): Steve points out t hat the items that Spotlight is finding inside PDFs, etc., are not metadata, but are actual content of the documents.

January 11, 2005 (11:23AM CST): Steve screwed up - \'that\'s why we have backup systems here!\' He accidentally started a slideshow - couldn\'t make it fit. Looked kinda like it might have been iPhoto 5!

January 11, 2005 (11:24AM CST): (cheers and laughter) Steve finds images relating to love and sunsets, using metadata stored in the images.

January 11, 2005 (11:25AM CST): Finder now includes Smart Folders, using Spotlight technology. The finder now sports a Spotlight view. Also demos Spotlight within System Preferences. Search your preferences for what you want to change.

January 11, 2005 (11:26AM CST): New screensaver for iTunes Artwork; makes a screen saver from your album art using Spotlight. That is a quick demo of Spotlight.

January 11, 2005 (11:27AM CST): Tiger sports a major upgrade to Mail. Includes Smart Mailboxes, Spotlight searching. There is no longer a drawer for yoru mailboxes, but instead it is integrated into the window.

January 11, 2005 (11:28AM CST): Mail now has a \"Slideshow\" button in e-mail, for creating a slideshow of attached pictures. Steve notes that searching 100,000 messages took only a fraction of a second. Steve demos creation of Smart Mailboxes.

January 11, 2005 (11:28AM CST): Slideshows include on-screen controls for controlling image sizes, previous next. Includes a button to save to iPhoto with ONE click from within Mail.app\'s onscreen sideshow controls.

January 11, 2005 (11:29AM CST): Pictures added with the one-click show up in the iPhoto library. That concludes the Mail.app demo.

January 11, 2005 (11:30AM CST): QuickTime 7 is being laucnhed today. First major upgrade in the last decade. More than 330 million QT 6. 98% of the downloads have been Windows users (!).

January 11, 2005 (11:30AM CST): Includes many new features. New codec, H264. Same people that brought us MPEG2 MPEG4. It has been adopted for the next generation of DVDs. Adopted by Blue Ray and HDDVD.

January 11, 2005 (11:31AM CST): Steve demonstrates scaling during active playback of a movie in QT7. Has onscreen controls for fullscreen playback as well (like Mail.app\'s). These are similar in function to Keynotes, I believe.

January 11, 2005 (11:32AM CST): Server load is currently spiking at around 16.66 - this is about 16 times normal load. Please bear with us if you have speed or connectivity issues. QuickTime 7 demo concluded. H264 is scalabe from cell phoens all the way up to HD. Foundation of QT 7.

January 11, 2005 (11:33AM CST): Now discussing Dashboard. Expose is great, but there\'s sometimes when you need to grab a quick piece of information (calculation, weather, etc.). Dashboard is designed to do this.

January 11, 2005 (11:34AM CST): Calculator, Address Book, Calendar, Stickies, iTunes contorller, World Clock, and a measurement converter, dictionary, thesaurus, stock tracker, flight tracker, translation, yellow pages. Sounds like Sherlock channels moving into the 21st century.

January 11, 2005 (11:35AM CST): Access via one button like Expose. Easy way to obtain more Widgets via a Widget dock of sorts (my words, not Steve).

January 11, 2005 (11:35AM CST): Apple Stock is down today, but \'we still have a lot more to go in the keynote, don\'t we?\' (cheers)

January 11, 2005 (11:36AM CST): Translator converts in real time - you type, it translates. Unit converter can convert pretty much any unit of measurement to any other unit of measurement. Speed, power, currency, etc.

January 11, 2005 (11:36AM CST): Steve demos being able to turn widgets around. Clock adjusts its color and shading according to the time of the day.

January 11, 2005 (11:37AM CST): Steve points out the nearest sushi places via the Yellow Pages. Weather in San Fran? Rainy (very)!

January 11, 2005 (11:38AM CST): Has illustration for various conceiveable types of weather, rain, snow, even wind. Steve notes that widgets are open to third party developers. He demos a thirdp arty widget from eBay that lets you search auctions.

January 11, 2005 (11:38AM CST): Concludes Dahsboard demo.

January 11, 2005 (11:39AM CST): Now discussing iChat and its 10 user audio conferencing features, and 4 user video conferencing features. Industry\'s first multi-party video conferencing using H264.

January 11, 2005 (11:40AM CST): Steve is starting a video conference with Danika - Scott Forstall and Phil Schiller apparently to follow...

January 11, 2005 (11:41AM CST): Steve is now inviting Phil Schiller. Danika is in Paris, Phil wonders if the keynote has started yet. Scott now joins us as well. Scott wonders if Steve wants to get coffee, or if he\'s busy.

January 11, 2005 (11:41AM CST): Steve notes the reflections on the \'tabletop\', kicks Phil out of the video chat, followed by Scott, followed by Danika.

January 11, 2005 (11:42AM CST): That\'s all we\'ll be seeing of Tiger. Disappointment - Steve says first half of 2005, nothiing more specific than that as hoped. But Long before Longhorn!

January 11, 2005 (11:42AM CST): 2005 is the year of High Definition Video.

January 11, 2005 (11:43AM CST): Final Cut Express HD has been introduced. Adds powerful HD editing to its incredible DV editing. Adds live type, Soundtrack directly into the program. Seamlessly integrates iMovie, Motion files.

January 11, 2005 (11:44AM CST): Will be priced at $299, available in February, upgrade to HD. $99 upgrade price from existing owners of FCE. HD is really starting to happen; 2005 will be the year of HD. What\'s next? iLife!

January 11, 2005 (11:45AM CST): Today we\'re introducing iLife \'05 - we\'re shocked! Almost every app has had a major upgrade. Box looks like A Bug\'s Life. We\'re starting with the most popular app, iPhoto.

January 11, 2005 (11:46AM CST): Better organizing. Simpler than before. We\'ve added folders, can have books, slideshows, albums inside of them (projects). Spotlight searching. Calendar view to find photos by time taken.

January 11, 2005 (11:46AM CST): Supports MPEG 4 movies. Can play them right in iPhoto. Supports RAW, completely throughout the application. (Colin, you can hail Steve now!)

January 11, 2005 (11:47AM CST): Library is displayed across the top of the editing window. You can access your library while editing a picture. Dashboard for iPhoto - can set brightness, saturation, temp, tint, sharpness, straightness, exposure. Works the same on JPEG and on RAW.

January 11, 2005 (11:48AM CST): Advanced slideshows. Can have individual transitions and times for slides. A whole new way to make books... demo coming.

January 11, 2005 (11:49AM CST): Steve has 25,000 photos in iPhoto. Scrolling speed is fast. Excellent performance. Steve demonstrates searching for photos taken on a lake. All of them that show have been tagged with the word \'lake\'. Demos calendar, and hopping between time specific pictures very quickly.

January 11, 2005 (11:49AM CST): Demonstrates MPEG4 support from within iPhoto, as taken off of Steve\'s camera.

January 11, 2005 (11:51AM CST): For anyone who\'s wondering, Steve is in his normal attire. Black mock turtleneck and blue jeans, accomanied by a bottle of water. Steve demos exposure adjustments, black level adjustments. Moves to another photo and demonstrates sharpening, exposure adjustment, black level adjustment, white level adjustment.

January 11, 2005 (11:52AM CST): Steve demos straightening... rotate and zomes and the same time. AWESOME!

January 11, 2005 (11:52AM CST): Steve Demos creating custom slide shows. This is adjusted from within the Slideshow tab, and lets you specify for each picture within the show. When you\'re done, you click play.

January 11, 2005 (11:53AM CST): Demos making books the new way. New book designs. Picture, travel ,water color, contemporary, folio, crayon, baby boy, (others). Would you like to lay out automatically, or manually? You now have the choice. Steve chooses automatic.

January 11, 2005 (11:55AM CST): Books can now be double-sided. You can click and drag photos to move them around and manipulate the layout. Can perform adjustments on a photo WHILE building a book via the previously mentioned Adjust widget.

January 11, 2005 (11:55AM CST): This concludes the iPhoto 5 demo.

January 11, 2005 (11:56AM CST): Print price is cut in half to 19¢/print off of iPhoto.

January 11, 2005 (11:57AM CST): Expanded the types of books we\'re offering. Existing hardcover, 11x8.5, now adding softcover for the same designs etc. Also adding an 8x6 softcover, and a pocketbook, 3.5x2.6.

January 11, 2005 (11:58AM CST): Books will be available tomorrow, day one! Only ONE of the new apps, so we\'re going to move on to iMovie.

January 11, 2005 (11:59AM CST): Dramatically faster, nondescructive trimming, transitions and effects, MPEG4, magic iMovie. Will automatically clip, add transitions, titles, etc. Basically it will amke your movie for you. But these aren\'t the biggest feature...

January 11, 2005 (11:59AM CST): iMovie now edits High Definition Video!

January 11, 2005 (12:00PM CST): We see what looks like an iWork icon in the Dock. It looks like an iMac with some documents and an iSight on it. It could possibly be Keynote, but we are undecided until he tells us.

January 11, 2005 (12:01PM CST): Steve demos a high definition iMovie. Incredible HD quality.

January 11, 2005 (12:03PM CST): In terms of interface, iMovie is not too terribly different. Can export back to camcorder in high def. Can make a current gen DVD and it will make a 16:9 DVD. Anxiously awaiting the ability to burn our own high def DVDs. What we have won\'t make all this possible though... Steve discusses a Sony HD camcorder (prosumer), only $3499! You\'ve gotta go get one (I think I will get 10 of them).

January 11, 2005 (12:03PM CST): President of Sony is coming onstage to talk about collaboration between Sony and Apple.

January 11, 2005 (12:04PM CST): Steve videotapes the discussion. Sony president discusses his admiration and respect for Apple products. He knows Steve is a fan of Sony products, but not all (hint hint).

January 11, 2005 (12:06PM CST): Ando (Sony president) continues to discuss the integration between Sony hardwware, Apple software, integration of their respective products.

January 11, 2005 (12:08PM CST): (Please note that due to a bit of an error, the Time zone on our updates is CST instead of PST. PST is 2 hours behind CST.)

January 11, 2005 (12:08PM CST): Ando is wrapping up - the long and short of his speech is that he\'s pleased to see Apple and Sony working together.

January 11, 2005 (12:09PM CST): Moving on to iDVD. We have a new iDVD. 15 new themes. They have \'animated drop zones\' and 1-step DVD creation. You can import video from a camcorder and create a DVD from its video with one click. Supporting all DVD formats now.

January 11, 2005 (12:10PM CST): Animated drop zones are animated areas of DVD menues that appear to be able to scroll either pictures or video. You can drag and drop to place images into the zones (like always).

January 11, 2005 (12:11PM CST): There\'s a variety of themes, which implement the drop zones in creative ways. One scrolls pictures from right to left, one will pick and choose a photo to zoom up from a mosaic. Others zoom out and in and perform an active slide show in the background of your movie. (etc.)

January 11, 2005 (12:14PM CST): GarageBand is being discussed now. Steve draws our attention to existing Jam Packs 1, 2, and 3. Today we\'re introducing GarageBand 4, orchestral instruments. If you\'re into GB, check it out. GB is newest of iLife apps, introduced a year ago, and it has been huge. GarageBand 2 is being introduced.

January 11, 2005 (12:14PM CST): Up to 8 track recoridng, real-time music notation, pitch and timing fixing, recorded tracks now as flexible as software instruments and loops, create your own loops, vocal transformer. Last year, John Meyer. This year - John Meyer!

January 11, 2005 (12:16PM CST): Real time music notation is AWESOME. John plays via a MIDI keyboard, and GB recordds a woodblock and a grand piano at the same time. Steve dmos playback. Can tweak notes after recording

January 11, 2005 (12:17PM CST): Now demoing multitrack recording. Going to record four tracks live. Two guitars, and two vocal tracks. Effectively importing a live performance into GB.

January 11, 2005 (12:18PM CST): GarageBand holds its own pulling all four tracks flawlessly - now is the perfect tiem to get one of those dual 2.5 GHz G5s! Recording continues...

January 11, 2005 (12:19PM CST): Done recording. (cheers, applause) We\'ve just finished recording 4 tracks live. We\'re playing them back now. Steve demos disabling and adjusting certain tracks.

January 11, 2005 (12:21PM CST): We won\'t be seeing the other features of GB 2 today... These 5 apps are iLife, but it\'s not JUST these 5. They all work together seamlessly in iLife \'05. Will be priced at $79 (up $30). Goes on sale a week from this Friday, January 22. Free on all new Macs, as always.

January 11, 2005 (12:22PM CST): Introducing iWork \'05!

January 11, 2005 (12:23PM CST): Keynote 2 - this was the app in the Dock on the other machine. Includes 10 new apple designed themes, animated text, powerful animated builds, presenter display, interactive slideshows, and self-playing \'kiosk\' slideshows. Steve has been using Keynote 2 for today, we\'ve seen some of these features so far.
