This type of behaviour is indeed mysterious but not unheard of for Mac OS X. I have not encountered your specific problem before, but here are a few possible solutions based on the clues you sent.
First thing to try:
1. Delete the extensions cache and restart. In the Terminal, type:
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
Restart. This file contains a cache of all the driver extensions. The next time the startup will take a little longer because it must recreate the Extensions.mkext file, but it will contain the latest versions (sometimes this procedure is necessary after Software Updates, but it is not supposed to be.)
2. If that does not fix it, try this. Interesting how these instructions appeared on today´s page at MacFixit: <http://www.macfixit.com/index.shtml>
. I believe it may help your case, because it mentions USB. Also PRAM is for OS9 and Open Firmware is for OS X and your situation seems related to both.
AirPort and USB access loss: a solution? A. D´Emanuele lost access to his USB peripherals after updating to the latest version of the AirPort software. Apple initially advised trying either a PRAM zap or going into Open Firmware at startup (via Command-Option-O-F) and typing the following:
reset-nvram<cr> set-defaults<cr> reset-all<cr>. Both fixed the problem temporarily, but the symptom returned on the next restart. However, **doing both on the same startup** seems to have fixed the problem permanently.
If neither solves the problem, I would have a few more questions and ideas:
1. Are you using software from the Logitech? Try deleting it (and don´t install it again). See if my TurboMouse fixes the problem. A couple people told me it works with their Logitech mouse (but they didn´t have any problems to begin).
2. Add a new User account in System Preferences, and log in as that person.
(This is to create a fresh environment with no preference files.) Does the mouse problem go away? If so, you may need to delete a ".plist" file, but I´m not sure which one.
3. You can also try searching MacFixIt for similar problem descriptions, or post your question there. It´s the best place to find other people with the same problems.
