The AppleWorks 6.2 updater fails to update AppleWorks 6.x.
Products affected
AppleWorks 6.x
Mac OS 8.x and later
Mac OS 9.x and later
Solution
If you cannot successfully update to AppleWorks 6.x, try the following troubleshooting tips:
1. Make sure there is a copy of AppleWorks 6.x installed on the computer´s hard disk.
2. Make sure there are not multiple copies of AppleWorks 6 on the computer´s hard disk by using Find File/Sherlock to search for ´AppleWorks 6.app´. If you find this file, then the updater has successfully updated AppleWorks, and you probably have multiple copies of the application. You should drag the extra copies to the Trash.
3. Make sure that the AppleWorks 6 application file is inside the AppleWorks 6 folder. If the application is on the desktop, select the file and choose Put Away from the File menu, which should put it back in its appropriate folder. If you want to be able to open AppleWorks from an icon on the desktop, make an alias of the application and put that on your desktop. For more information on aliases choose Mac Help from the Finder´s Help menu.
4. Make sure that your issue is not caused by an extensions conflict. To test for this, set your extensions to the "Mac OS all" set in the Extensions Manager control panel. See article 30929: "Mac OS: Extension Conflict Troubleshooting/Extensions Manager Features" for more information on extensions troubleshooting, or click the Help button in the Extensions Manager control panel.
5. Occasionally a disk utility or some other tool might modify the creation date of the AppleWorks 6.0.4 application, which will prevent the installer from recognizing it. The creation date of the AppleWorks 6 application file should be ´Fri., May 19 2000, 12:00 PM.´ If your copy has a different date or time, take any personal files out of the AppleWorks 6 folder, drag the folder and all of its contents to the Trash, reinstall AppleWorks 6.x from your install CD, and then run the AppleWorks 6.2 updater again.
6. Make sure you download the same language version of the updater as the version of the Mac OS on your computer. If you are in Canada or the United States be sure you have not downloaded the International English version, as it is not intended for the North American English version of the Mac OS.
Note: The AppleWorks 6.2 Updater replaces any version of AppleWorks for Macintosh between 6.0 and 6.1.2 with AppleWorks 6.2 for Mac OS X 10.0 and AppleWorks 6.1.2 for Mac OS 8.1 through 9.x. These versions have a common feature set but are optimized for the appropriate operating system.
