"Hello,
Windows XP SP2 includes new drivers for FireWire. These new drivers have
a phantastic new feature: as soon as they recognize a FireWire 800
capable device, the whole bus speed is limited to 100 MBit/s. In other
words: no audio record/playback anymore with a Fireface 800!
This is not a RME case, as it affects ANY FireWire 800 device. If you
have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800 harddisk - go see the bits come one
by one through the 'Fire'Wire cable...
We were aware by this problem for some time, but really did not imagine
that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an existing standard.
We just downloaded the final public version, and it is simply unbelievable!
.From our side there is zero that we can do, as the detection and
slow-down happens outside of our hardware and driver control. If you
research the issue, you will find that there are alredy companies that
try to sell new FireWire drivers to you, so that it works again under
SP2. A word of warning: those drivers will most likely not work
correctly with a Fireface 800!
The solution for this mess is as simple as it can be: after the SP2
update, reinstall the old (SP1) FireWire drivers. In our tests this
solved all problems and brought back the old performance and compatibility.
Detailed instructions on how to do this will be released by RME tomorrow.
